Gary Walker & The Carnabeats: ‘Cutie Morning Moon’ (1968)

In February 1968 Gary Walker (a.k.a. Gary Leeds, of The Walker Brothers) released this single, where he is backed, as a one-off collaboration, by The Carnabeats, one of the better-known bands in Japan’s “Group Sounds” scene. Lyrics were penned by Scott Walker, who also co-produced the song. The recording session took place through the night and, as it was completed, they spotted a pale moon in the sky, hence the inspiration for the song title.

“I meet the morning moon
The sky’s still lit up in tears
Lovin’ you’s so hard to do
And the fog don’t hide my fears
Engraved on my mind
Patterns of Michiko

Left everything behind
For these buildings of granite grey
Memories cloud my mind
Silence turns away

I greet the afternoon
With my feet feeling just like lead
Everything ends too soon
I should’ve stayed in bed
Engraved on my mind
Patterns of Michiko

Left everything behind
For these buildings of granite grey
Memories cloud my mind
Silence turns away

I greet the afternoon
With my feet feeling just like lead
Everything ends too soon
I should’ve stayed in bed
Engraved on my mind
Patterns of Michiko.”
